The work of many great photographers are in the Bettie Page section showcasing their diverse styles. Many chose to photograph Bettie Page nude. Some of the photographers are well known while others obscure. Since Bettie Page was photographed by many people, we have a unique opportunity to study many different interpretations; from the fetish girl of Sam Menning to the girl-next-door of Arnold Kovacs. Bettie Page was an uncomplicated woman who represented the desires of the photographer then ultimately the viewer. How an individual decides to interpret that information has been cause for many heated debates but the fact is that Bettie Page was an excellent model who posed for a living, nothing more, nothing less. One particular collection that depicts Bettie in reality would be the photographs of Charles West which show her as a seductress.

A few highlights of the Bettie Page section are: The King Of Pin-up Art Amsie, recently discovered Bettie Page photographer and disk jockey Robert Stanton, a mysterious anonymous well-to-do pinup hobbyist "The Doctor", View-Master photographer Paul Knaut, the great Joseph Hanson and the incomparable Sam Menning whose section features a wonderful 65.8M scan. A recent discovery uncovered some of the greatest candid shots of Bettie Page ever taken by camera club photographer Don Baida. If you would like a quick overview of Bettie Page's career, you can jump to the Chronology section.

Most of the material presented in the Bettie Page section is within my possession or has passed through my hands. A good portion came from a huge collection used for making the Private Peeks magazines much of it never published. I probably have the largest collection of ORIGINAL Bettie Page negatives and slides many accompanied with copyright ownership.

If you are interested in purchasing an original piece, please ask to see a new scan of the object since many of the images have been optically corrected using Photoshop. Any item that is sold through Private Peeks, is sold as a collectable without copyright transfer "inferred or implied".

Bettie Page is much in demand these days and is enjoying the fruits of her labor much more now than she ever did when she originally posed. I have been fortunate enough and enjoyed working on many projects with Bettie Page. She was always very sweet and worried if her signature was perfect enough. Sometimes if Bettie Page wasn't exactly sure of a specific request, I would be lucky enough to get a call directly from her!

The people who took photographs of Bettie Page are enabling future generations their unique perspective of pin-up photography during a very paranoid time period. Many were persecuted for their work. To this day, many Bettie Page photographers are still afraid and hide what they did. If you are tired of the same old thing and looking for something new, then this is the place for you. Private Peeks wants to find out who took what photograph, where, when, why, how and then to preserve that history. Membership info.

Intro

Isn't she beautiful? It's too bad the above photograph isn't Bettie Page. Years ago, someone on eBay claimed it was. The image came from the October 1948 issue of Photographer's Handbook. Bettie Page was born Betty Page in Nashville Tennessee Apr. 22 1923. Bettie Page later changed her name so it would match the spelling of her siblings names. Leaving a troubled childhood, disappointing marriage and not so wonderful teaching career behind, Bettie Page left for New York City in 1948 seeking fame and fortune. Bettie Page started taking acting classes. While enjoying a nice walk at Coney Island, Bettie Page met the man who would help her turn the world of pinup photography on fire, Jerry Tibbs. He saw something in Bettie Page; a nice, shiny, protruding forehead. A little snip of the scissors and voila, Jerry's suggestion that Bettie Page use bangs somehow worked not only to cover her forehead, but also in creating a masterpiece. One possible fact that escapes many Bettie Page fans is that Bettie Page probably graced more magazine covers than anyone in history! Original vintage Bettie Page photographs are rare especially 8x10" photographs.

This rudimentary chronology of Bettie Page's work has been put together using actual vintage documentation. Any additional information or corrections would be greatly appreciated.
