The prevailing object of interest from pre 1940s nudes was the bottom. The
more round and large the better for the photographer. The author has seen
the latter pushed to the extreme. During this time, rotundness as being
desirable was on the decline. Early nude paintings from the 1700s
exaggerated the derriere to sometimes frightening and monstrous proportions.
In ancient times while humankind was still in the process of developing
language, the bottom was already a longtime visual communicative device.
In France, early cave drawings show man's love affair with the bottom in a
very direct manner. The 1940s were a transitional period that showed a
shift from the bottom to breasts as being the main object of interest. The
1950s gave rise to a new era of breast infatuation that has not since abated.
